Our Charities
Each year AWS selects charities to partner with. For the 2022-2023 club year, we have chosen to sponsor the charities listed below.
We host several events throughout the year to raise proceeds for these charities. To learn more about our events and activities that support our charities, please click here.
Momentum Children’s Charity helps families of seriously ill children to keep moving forward. Working across Southwest London, Surrey and Sussex, they partner with local hospitals who refer families to them following a child’s diagnosis of cancer or a life-challenging condition. Through their Family Support Team, they work closely with these families to understand their individual needs, offering them personally tailored support, both in hospital and at home. Their support services include counselling and a range of creative therapy services - such as play, art and music - as well as special experiences and respite breaks to ease some of the stresses that come with a gruelling treatment plan. If the unthinkable happens, and a child dies, they offer bereavement support and stand by families for as long as they’re needed. They also improve the environment for children treated in local hospitals with children’s ward refurbishments; transforming bare, clinical areas into bright, child-friendly spaces. At any one time they support around 240 families whose child is in active treatment and a further 110 bereaved families. They’re there whatever the outcome, for as long as they’re needed, so that no family has to cope alone. For more information check their website below: |
Elmbridge CAN aims to build a culture of welcome for refugees and asylum seekers within Elmbridge and to facilitate the settlement of more refugees in the Borough. The charity was established in 2016, in response to the Syrian crisis. Some 25 families, primarily from war-torn areas of the Middle East, have made their homes in Elmbridge, supported by the charity. In Autumn 2021, over 200 evacuated Afghans arrived and were temporarily accommodated at a local hotel. In spring 2022, dozens of Ukrainians began to arrive; a total of 500 to 600 may be settled with us by the time you read this. As a consequence, Elmbridge CAN has had to grow very quickly, and at the time of writing has over a hundred volunteers and four paid staff. This growth will inevitably continue as war and terror engulf many parts of the world and we in Elmbridge are able, fortunately, to provide safe haven. As the name implies, this charity shows what people in the local community CAN do, when they simply feel compelled to do something. And the rewards for all, as fellow human beings, are enormous For more information check their website below: |
![]() | FAWCO is an umbrella organization overseeing American and International clubs around the globe. FAWCO is a network of independent associations representing 64 member clubs (of which AWSurrey is a proud member) in 34 countries around the world. Both FAWCO and their philanthropic arm, The FAWCO Foundation are 501(c)(3) incorporated organizations. The FAWCO Foundation is the philanthropic ‘heart’ of FAWCO. Its sole purpose is to aid charitable, education and scientific programs, working with its member clubs, offering members the opportunity to benefit from their two main programs, Development Grants and Education Awards. AWS has always been an ardent supporter of many varied local charities. But AWS membership is an international mix, and we recognise our responsibility to make a difference on a global level as well as a local one. As a result, for many years we have sponsored a FAWCO Development Grant (DG) called AWSurrey Hope Through Education. Guidelines, eligibility information, applications and nomination forms can be found online at their main website or the FAWCO Foundation website. FAWCO and the FAWCO Foundation jointly work towards a multi-year program that brings critical global issues to the attention of FAWCO clubs, their members and to the world. The AWS Board includes a FAWCO Representative who acts as the link between the club and FAWCO, receiving and disseminating information and communication for our club and organizing fundraising activities to support FAWCO philanthropic projects.
